Last updated: October 2026. Tested on ChatGPT (free version) output, human-written samples, and AI text paraphrased by a real person.
Every AI detector claims to be the most accurate AI detector on the market. Almost all these statements are based upon raw data or completely unedited AI output, both of which are the easiest type of text to identify as AI-generated.
We were interested in finding out if the best AI detectors would perform similarly well when subjected to the same writing submitted by actual humans. So we took 7 writing samples, which included pure AI, pure human, and an AI article that a person rewrote by hand, and ran them through 11 AI detection tools. All of the results shown in this guide were generated during that test, including each tool’s score and threshold limit. Screenshots of every result are included in each tool’s entry below.
Quick Verdict: The Best AI Detectors in 2026

Most of the other detectors performed with high accuracy on the clear-cut examples. The real difference was shown when they were tested using a mixed sample, and only three of them made it through every test.
Top picks:
- Walter Writes (best AI detector overall): Passed all seven tests, flagged every AI sample at 99%, kept every human sample at 1% or lower, and caught the hand-paraphrased sample at 90%. It costs $8 per month if you pay annually.
- Proofademic (best AI detector for teachers): Got the highest mixed score out of all of our ranked tools, 93%, and had no human samples above 1%. Starts at $8 per month if billed annually.
- Originality.ai (best for bulk scanning): The only other tool to pass all seven tests, with 90% on the mixed sample and strong bulk scanning. Its mixed-sample pass came after a mid-test update to the tool. Starts at $12.95/month, billed annually.
Quick Decision: Which AI Detector Should You Use?

How We Tested
In order to make the test data comparable among all detectors, we ran all tests under the same conditions.
Testing Methodology
- Three content types: Academic essays, creative writing, and social media (LinkedIn) posts
- Two baseline samples per type: The first was created using a free version of ChatGPT in October 2026. None of these samples were edited or altered by humans. The second baseline sample was an example of the same type of content that is written by a real person.
- One mixed sample: We also used a mixed sample, which was a blog generated by ChatGPT that our team member paraphrased manually by rewriting each line.
- Same text for every tool: Each detector scanned the exact same samples and there were no edits made between the different tools.
- Screenshots of every result: We took screenshots of each detector’s results so you can see the numbers behind the tables.
Why the Mixed Sample Matters
The mixed sample was an article created using ChatGPT. Our team member then reworded this article by hand, with each individual line rewritten by them without checking how it would score on any detector. This was to see how well a detector could find the AI usage underneath a humanized text.
This reflects how AI is historically employed for real-world purposes. In a 2026 study of 1163 master’s theses, most theses that Pangram flagged showed partial AI use rather than fully generated text. This is the test that separated the strongest tools from the rest.

Pass Thresholds
Any result is only considered a pass once the criteria listed below are met. A checkmark (✅) in each results table will indicate that the tool has completed this criterion.
| Sample type | ✅ Pass | ⚠️ Moderate | ❌ Fail |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI-generated | 91 to 100% AI | 50 to 90% AI | 0 to 50% AI |
| Human-written | 0 to 10% AI | 11 to 50% AI | 50 to 100% AI |
| Mixed | 81 to 100% AI | 60 to 80% AI | 0 to 60% AI |
Tools are ranked first by the number of tests they have completed, then by the fewest failures. Any remaining tied tests will be ranked based on which had the highest AI-generated average and then which had the higher mixed score. Each table provides all scores for each tool, allowing you to use your own threshold if you prefer.
Testing Limitations
Each content type used one AI and one human sample, and the mixed category used a single sample. Some free plans capped scan length, so we scanned as much as each allowed and noted it in the entry. Results reflect each tool’s version in October 2026. Pricing was checked on vendor sites on October 21 and 22, 2026.
1. Walter Writes: Best AI Detector for Students, ChatGPT and SEO Content

Walter Writes ranked as the best AI detector in this test, with the highest accuracy across all three content types. It flagged every AI sample at 99%, kept every human sample at 1% or lower, and caught the hand-paraphrased sample at 90%.
It is built for students checking essays before submission and SEO writers checking ChatGPT drafts before publishing. You get a percentage score with the AI-flagged sections, and an AI humanizer in the same workflow if a section needs rewriting.
Key Features
- AI detection with a clear percentage score and flagged sections
- Detection and humanizing in one interface
- Support for 80+ languages
- Free Chrome extension for checking text where you write
- AI detector API and Claude MCP connector for platforms and workflows

Walter Results: Human Social Media Post

Walter Results: Mixed Essay (AI Article → Human Paraphrased)

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: Walter Writes flagged every AI sample at 99%, whether it was an AI academic essay, creative piece, or a LinkedIn post.
False positives on human content: No human sample scored greater than 1%. This means a student submitting original work is highly unlikely to have it flagged as AI before submission.
Mixed content detection: The 90% accuracy rating is the most important result. It detected hand-paraphrased AI content at an accuracy rate of 90%, whereas other applications, such as GPT Zero, Quillbot, and Copyleaks, failed to identify this mixed content.
Notable patterns: Results were consistent across academic, creative, and social writing. For SEO writers, a light rewrite of a ChatGPT draft won’t produce a false all-clear.
Pros
- Passed all seven tests, including the mixed sample
- Human samples stayed at 1% or lower.
- Detection and humanizing in one workflow
- Free Chrome extension, API, and MCP access for wider workflows
- Free AI Checker also available
Cons
- Per-request limits start at 750 words on the Starter plan

2. Proofademic: Best AI Detector for Teachers and Academic Work

Proofademic is an AI detector for academic writing built specifically for teachers, professors, and anyone who reviews essays and research papers. It posted the highest mixed score of any ranked tool, 93%, while keeping every human sample at 1% or lower.
For a teacher, those numbers matter much more than the headline claim of accurate detection. It means honest students will rarely be falsely accused, and as long as there has been some rewording, even the most sophisticatedly rewritten AI-generated essay will be detected.
Key Features
- Multilingual AI detection on every plan, including free
- Built-in plagiarism checker alongside AI detection
- Sentence-level AI highlighting on paid plans.
- Batch scanning and full multi-page document scans
- Exportable reports for grading records

Proofademic Results: Mixed Essay (AI Article → Human Paraphrased)

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: Proofademic scored 98% on the AI academic essay and 99% on the creative piece and LinkedIn post. Its lowest score was still well clear of the pass line.
False positives on human content: The human academic essay scored 0%, and the other two human samples scored 1%. Students who write their own essays are very unlikely to face a false flag.
Mixed content detection: At 93%, Proofademic was the strongest-ranked tool on paraphrased AI. Our mixed sample tested exactly that kind of rewording, and it didn’t get past Proofademic.
Notable patterns: On paid plans, sentence-level highlighting shows which passages drove the score. That gives teachers specific passages to discuss rather than a single percentage.
Pros
- Highest mixed-sample score among ranked tools
- Human samples stayed at 1% or lower.
- Multilingual AI detection and a plagiarism checker on every plan
- Sentence-level highlighting for academic reviews.
Cons
- The free option is a 3-day trial capped at 1,000 words.
- Batch scanning and sentence-level highlighting need a paid plan.

3. Originality.ai: Best for Bulk Scanning

Originality.ai was one of the top three tools to pass all seven tests. While testing initially, it failed to flag the mixed sample as AI, but during our testing, the tool was updated in between, and it passed on the mixed sample. It is built for agencies and publishers that need to check large volumes of content.
Alongside AI detection, it runs plagiarism, readability, and fact checks from one dashboard, with bulk scanning and file uploads on paid plans.
Key Features
- AI detection, plagiarism checker, and content quality score in one tool
- Fact and hallucination checking
- Bulk scan and file uploads (docx, pdf, doc) on Pro
- Writing replay in browser extensions
- API access on Enterprise

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: It scored 99% on the AI essay and creative piece. The LinkedIn post came in lower at 95%, still a clear pass.
False positives on human content: Two human samples scored 0%. The human LinkedIn post scored 4%, the only nonzero human result, and well inside the pass band.
Mixed content detection: At 90%, Originality.ai matched Walter Writes on paraphrased AI and outperformed every other competitor.
Notable patterns: Originality.ai updated its interface during our testing. Before the update, it scored the mixed sample at 0%. After it, the same sample scored 90%. The table shows results from the current version.
Test note: The free plan gives 10,000 words (100 credits) once, enough to run all seven samples.
Pros
- Passed all seven tests, including the mixed sample
- Bulk scan, file uploads, and plagiarism checks in one plan
- 10,000 free words to test it before paying
Cons
- Free credits are one-time and don’t renew.
- API access starts on Enterprise, at $136.58/month billed annually

4. Pangram: Best for Scanned Documents (OCR)

Pangram scored 100% on every AI sample and 0% on every human sample, the cleanest pure-sample record in the test. Its only miss in our test was the mixed sample.
Its standout feature is OCR. You can upload scanned or photographed documents and check them without retyping, which few detectors in this roundup support.
Key Features
- File upload with OCR for scanned documents
- Google Docs and Gmail integration
- Similarity detection on every scan
- AI image detection (100 scans a month on Individual)
- Automatic scanning of social and Substack feeds

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: All three AI samples had a 100% accuracy rate for detecting raw AI.
False positives on human content: A perfect 0% on all three human samples. This means no false positives were detected on any of them.
Mixed content detection: With a score of 67% on our single hand-paraphrased sample, Pangram picked up on the AI influence but was unable to call the text completely AI, placing it into the moderate category.
Notable patterns: Independent research points the other way. A 2026 study in the International Journal for Educational Integrity found Pangram the most accurate of four tools on hybrid and humanised papers, and a 2025 NBER working paper found it robust against humanizer tools. The 2026 study inserted AI-written passages or rewrote them with a GPT-4o prompt, and the NBER paper used humanizer tools, while our sample was paraphrased by hand. Treat our 67% as one data point, not a verdict on Pangram.
Test note: On our free plan, we have 20 credits where each credit gives you 100 words. So each scan will cover a maximum of 2000 words. We used up all three scans.
Pros
- Perfect results on all six pure samples
- OCR for scanned and photographed documents
- Google Docs and Gmail integration
Cons
- Moderate results on the mixed sample
- Highest entry price in the test, $15/month billed annually
- Free credits run out after a few scans.

5. GPTZero: Best for Quick One-Off Checks

GPTZero is probably one of the best-known tools for identifying AI-generated writing. The free version will allow you to scan up to 10,000 words per month. It achieved a perfect score against all six pure samples but failed to detect the mixed sample.
This means GPTZero can be used as a quick check on raw drafts but is less effective when checking edited versions of the text.
Key Features
- Free plan with 10,000 words a month and a basic AI scan
- AI highlights in the Chrome extension
- Multilingual AI detection and downloadable AI reports on Premium.
- Scans of up to 250 files at once and LMS integration on Professional

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: A perfect 100% on all three AI samples.
False positives on human content: A perfect 0% on all three human samples.
Mixed content detection: At 19%, GPTZero treated a hand-paraphrased AI article as mostly human. That is a clear fail.
Notable patterns: On clear-cut text, it was as accurate as anything we tested. On rewritten AI, it missed the one sample that tested that skill. The 2026 study found the same pattern, with GPTZero underestimating AI content in hybrid and humanised papers.
Pros
- Perfect results on all six pure samples
- Free plan with 10,000 words a month
- AI highlights in the Chrome extension
Cons
- Failed the mixed sample
- The free plan includes only one advanced scan.
- Premium starts at $12.99/month billed annually.

6. QuillBot: Best for Paraphrase-and-Check Workflows

QuillBot is one of the most well-known tools available to assist users in paraphrasing, and its AI detector sits inside the same suite. It received perfect scores from all six of the individual pure samples, but it failed at the task when it came to the mixed sample, receiving a score of 15%.
If you are using QuillBot to rewrite the AI-generated text, then this can be very convenient, but the catch is that it struggled with exactly that kind of reworked text in our test.
Key Features
- AI detector inside the QuillBot writing suite
- Paraphraser, grammar checker, and summarizer in the same account
- Plagiarism checker on Premium
- Free AI detection (limited), with full access on Premium

Mixed content detection: At 15%, QuillBot read a human-paraphrased AI article as mostly human, a clear fail.
Notable patterns: Use it to check raw drafts, not text that has already been reworked. We compare it with Grammarly in QuillBot’s AI Detector vs. Grammarly’s AI Detector.
Test note: The free plan scans 1,200 words at a time, so the human creative writing and mixed samples were scanned up to 1,200 words.
Pros
- Perfect results on all six pure samples
- Detector and paraphraser in one suite
- Low entry price, $8.33/month billed annually
Cons
- Failed the mixed sample
- Free scans cap at 1,200 words

7. Copyleaks: Best for Multilingual Text

Copyleaks is the long-established plagiarism and AI detection platform that has the broadest language support of all platforms reviewed here. It was 100% accurate on each of the pure samples, but it scored 0% on the mixed sample, which was the lowest of all the platforms tested.
If you review text in several languages, its coverage is hard to match. If you need to catch rewritten AI, look higher up this list.
Key Features
- AI detection in 30+ languages and plagiarism detection in 100+
- AI and plagiarism results in a single report
- AI image detection
- Browser extension with saved scans and a Google Docs add-on
- Multiple files in one upload

What These Results Mean
Accuracy on AI content: A perfect 100% on all three AI samples.
False positives on human content: A perfect 0% on all three human samples.
Mixed content detection: A 0% score means Copyleaks read the paraphrased article as entirely human. That is a clear miss on the one test that mirrors how AI text is usually edited.
Notable patterns: Copyleaks gave confident, all-or-nothing scores throughout. That worked on pure text but left no middle ground for mixed writing. The 2026 study also found Copyleaks weak on hybrid and humanised papers.
Pros
- Perfect results on all six pure samples
- AI and plagiarism checks in one report, in 30+ languages
- Browser extension and Google Docs add-on
Cons
- Lowest mixed score in the test
- Entry plan is $13.99/month billed annually.

8. Undetectable.ai: Best for Pre-Rewrite Scans

The main function of Undetectable.ai is a humanizer that includes AI detection in all plans. It detected almost every AI-generated sample at 99%, but it has difficulty detecting human- written text and mixed samples.
We recommend using it for a quick scan before your rewrite but not as a final verdict.

Mixed content detection: At 41%, it saw some AI in the paraphrased sample but not enough to pass.
Notable patterns: Short, informal human writing gave it the most trouble. Longer human samples stayed low.
Pros
- 99% on every AI sample
- Lowest entry price in the test, $5/month billed annually
- Unlimited AI detection on every plan
Cons
- Moderate result on the human LinkedIn post
- Failed the mixed sample
- Plans are priced around humanizer word limits.

9. Grammarly: Best for In-Editor Checks

Grammarly’s AI Detector sits within the writing assistant that most people already use to find grammatical errors and correct the tone. This feature has flagged no human samples. The results mainly varied when evaluating AI-generated content.
The biggest benefit to using Grammarly is its ease of use. It integrates its AI detector into its regular editing interface and browser extension, where you do all your writing.
Key Features
- AI detection inside the Grammarly editor and browser extension
- Grammar, clarity, and tone suggestions alongside detection

Sapling*: Best for Enterprise API Integration (Unranked)

*Sapling is listed last and unranked. The free plan offered by Sapling scans only the first 2000 characters of our sample, which is roughly 300 words. So it has checked far fewer words than all the other tools in comparison.
It offers many features as a writing assistant that include an AI detector and a metered API, aimed at teams or developers who would like to have detection capabilities integrated into their own platforms.
Key Features
- Metered AI detection API for developers
- Extensions for Chrome, Google Docs, Outlook, and Word
- Up to 100,000 characters per check on Pro

What These Results Mean
Within the first 2,000 characters of each sample, Sapling passed every test. Those are strong numbers on a short excerpt, but they can’t be weighed against full-sample scans from the other tools. Pro raises the cap to 100,000 characters per check.
Pros
- Strong results on the excerpts it scanned
- Metered API for developers
- Works in Chrome, Google Docs, Outlook, and Word
Cons
- Free checks stop at 2,000 characters.
- Enterprise plans start at 10 seats.

Tools We Couldn’t Test
We planned to add three more tools to this list, but we could not test them:
- Writer.com: There is a note on Writer’s own site that both of their AI content detectors as well as their detection API were shut down on December 22, 2025. The old detector webpage now redirects directly to Writer’s homepage.

- BrandWell (formerly Content at Scale): Their AI detector webpage redirects to Moxby, BrandWell’s sister product, which does not have a free AI detector. We found no alternative method to use this tool.
- Turnitin: Its AI writing detection feature can only be accessed via school or university subscription, as no personal subscription options are offered. For how it compares, see our Turnitin vs GPTZero 2026 benchmark.
Best AI Detector for Each Use Case
| Use Case | Best Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Students checking essays before submission | Walter Writes | 1% or lower on every human sample |
| ChatGPT and SEO content checks | Walter Writes | 99% on every AI sample, 90% on the mixed sample |
| Teachers and academic work | Proofademic | 93% on the mixed sample, 1% or lower on human samples |
| Bulk scanning for agencies | Originality.ai | Passed all seven tests, bulk scan on Pro |
| Scanned or printed documents | Pangram | File upload with OCR |
| Multilingual text | Copyleaks | AI detection in 30+ languages |
| Quick one-off checks | GPTZero | Perfect on pure samples, free plan |
| Checks inside your editor | Grammarly | Runs in the editor you already use |
For educators, no single score can ever be used to make a decision about whether or not a student committed academic dishonesty. Turnitin’s chief product officer has said schools should never use its tools as the sole basis for deciding a student cheated, as reported by NBC News, and our piece on AI detection bias and false positives explains why.
Best Free AI Detectors
Walter Writes, GPTZero, ZeroGPT, QuillBot, Grammarly, Copyleaks, Pangram, and Undetectable.ai all offer free checks. Walter Writes has a free AI checker for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini text. QuillBot caps scans at 1,200 words and Grammarly at 2,000 words, while Pangram’s 20 free credits cover up to 2,000 words in total. Originality.ai allows 10,000 free words at a time, which is the easiest way to try this tool.
Apart from this, AIDetector.ac and AITextDetector.ai are also a few of the best free options for long-form research. This will give you an idea of how well the service works and if you need to subscribe to a plan. Always treat the free service as a preliminary screening tool to confirm results on important assignments.
How AI Detection Works
An AI detector, also called an AI content detector or AI checker, estimates whether text was written by a person or generated by a model like ChatGPT. It doesn’t know who wrote the text. It looks for statistical patterns that are common in machine writing.
The two very common signals that any AI detector looks for are perplexity, the predictability of word choices, and burstiness, how much sentence length and structure vary. AI-generated text has a lower amount of unpredictability and less variation than human-created content. But human-edited AI content breaks those patterns. That is why the hybrid samples have caused such debate in the field.
A study conducted in 2023 reviewed 14 different AI detection tools. It concluded that while no tool was fully accurate and reliable, editing the AI text has made it increasingly difficult for the tools to identify the manipulation. A 2026 study found that false positives are now an extremely rare occurrence, but rewritten AI is still where most detectors slip. Our guide on how AI detectors work goes deeper.
AI Watermarking and Detection
Some AI developers have explored invisible watermarks in their output, such as Google DeepMind’s SynthID Text. Invisible watermarks are present only if a model applies them, but heavy editing can degrade this watermark. So detectors primarily rely on analyzing how something was written.
AI Detector vs Plagiarism Checker
A plagiarism checker will scan the work you have provided against existing content and flag those instances. An AI checker will look at the writing in your assignment and attempt to determine if a machine was used to write it.
It is possible for an assignment written by hand, with no computer assistance, to fail an AI test, and for copied human text to pass AI detection. Originality.ai, Copyleaks, and Proofademic all include both checks.
Who Uses AI Detectors
Schools and universities use AI detection tools for academic integrity checks, whereas students will often run their submitted assignments through an AI detector before it reaches Turnitin. Publishers and SEO teams are using these tools as a first step to review new content drafts by submitting to Google’s Search Essentials. Some employers screen cover letters, which is why our cover letter writing guide focuses on keeping your own voice.
Can AI Detectors Be Bypassed?
Our mixed test answers this directly. Here is how far each tool’s score dropped when AI text was paraphrased by a person:
| Detector | Raw AI (average) | AI paraphrased by a human | Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walter Writes | 99% | 90% | 9 pts |
| Proofademic | 98.6% | 93% | 5.6 pts |
| Originality.ai | 97.6% | 90% | 7.6 pts |
| Pangram | 100% | 67% | 33 pts |
| GPTZero | 100% | 19% | 81 pts |
| QuillBot | 100% | 15% | 85 pts |
| Copyleaks | 100% | 0% | 100 pts |
| Undetectable.ai | 99% | 41% | 58 pts |
| Grammarly | 89% | 6% | 83 pts |
| ZeroGPT | 80.4% | 26.4% | 54 pts |
| Sapling* | 99% | 99% | 0 pts |
Paraphrasing beat most detectors but not the strongest three. Tools that rewrite at the structural level go further, as our list of the best AI humanizers shows.
Using them to submit AI work where it is banned still breaches academic and workplace policies. To spot AI text yourself, see how to detect ChatGPT writing.
Final Verdict
AI Detectors are now doing better with pure AI and pure human text. Six out of the ten best-ranked AI detection tools scored at least 99% on every AI sample. But the true test is detecting rewritten AI, and only three ranked tools were able to pass this test.
- Best AI detector overall: Walter Writes, with 99% on every AI sample, 1% or lower on human writing, and 90% on the mixed sample. It is the best AI checker for students and SEO writers.
- Best AI detector for teachers: Proofademic, with the highest mixed score among ranked tools and no false flags on human writing.
- Best for bulk scanning: Originality.ai is really good. It was able to pass all 7 tests, including the mixed sample.
Regardless of which tool you select to use, be sure to view the score provided by the selected tool as simply one piece of data in your overall decision-making process. Want to build detection into your own platform? Walter’s AI Detector API covers that.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Detection
Which AI Detector Is Most Accurate in 2026?
In our test, Walter Writes, Proofademic, and Originality.ai were the most accurate AI detectors, passing all seven tests, including AI text paraphrased by a person. Pangram, GPTZero, QuillBot, and Copyleaks were perfect on pure AI and human samples but weaker on the mixed one.
Can Turnitin Detect Content Written With ChatGPT or Other AI Tools?
Turnitin includes AI writing detection, but it is only available through institutions, so we couldn’t test it. Turnitin itself has said schools should never use its tools as the sole basis for deciding a student cheated, according to NBC News.
Which AI Detector Is Best for Teachers?
Proofademic. It was able to identify human paraphrased content at 93%, the highest among ranked tools, and kept every human-created sample at a rate of 1% or less. Always use the output from any one of these tools as a reference point for a follow-up discussion with your students about their writing.
Do Tools Like QuillBot Still Work to Bypass AI Detectors?
Some paraphrase software does defeat certain types of AI detectors. In our test, a human paraphrased AI article scored 19% or lower on all three: GPTZero, QuillBot, and Copyleaks. But they were rated 90% or higher on all three: Walter Writes, Proofademic, and Originality.ai.
Can AI Detectors Flag Real Human Writing by Mistake?
Yes. In our testing, most tools rated the human-generated samples at 0% to 1%, but Undetectable.ai rated a human LinkedIn post at 12%. False positive concerns are why Vanderbilt University disabled Turnitin’s AI detector in 2023.
What’s the Difference Between an AI Detector and a Plagiarism Checker?
A plagiarism checker looks for similarities with already published works to detect copying. An AI detector looks for signs of how something was written to see whether a machine produced it. Original text can be flagged as AI, and copied human text can pass an AI check.
Will AI Detectors Become Stricter in the Future?
Probably. Most of these tools are updated frequently. Originality.AI score of 0% on our mixed sample jumped to 90% with an interface update during the middle of our testing, and Writer.com has completely discontinued their detector. It would be better to check what works instead of depending on outdated data.
Which Free AI Detector Should I Use for Quick Checks?
Walter Writes’ free AI checker. In our test it scored 99% on every AI sample, kept human writing at 1% or lower, and caught the hand-paraphrased sample at 90%. GPTZero’s free plan also works for quick checks on raw drafts, but it missed the paraphrased sample at 19%.
